I have used two types of external buttons with XCSoar
* Buttons connected to Vario - in my case Vega - but other have hardware inputs
* Buttons via Bluetooth device
I used one of these -

(Not necessarily that one, or that place, but it looks like that).
Obviously, if you are using a IOIO, then it should be fairly easy.
