I don't think anything graphical should be using those. They are fine
for terminal apps.
If this had already existed, then Beryl wouldn't have had to be set up
to do odd things to start up the first time.
Such as what? Beryl should just support --replace and then you do:
$ beryl --replace
$ gnome-session-save
or the KDE equivalent. You don't even have to log out (as you do with an
env variable)
