Hello, I am bringing this discussion to the xdg mailing list that I started with Rodney Dowes regarding adding the "<3" emoticon to the Icon Naming Scheme as a heart. Reproduced below is our conversation to get the conversation started here and (hopefully) completed.
---- BEGIN EMAIL THREAD ---- Date: Wed, 24 Feb 2010 11:37:08 -0500 From: Greg Grossmeier <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: Icon Naming Specification proposal - add "<3" to emotes Hello Rodney, I am emailing you because I recently reported a bug against Empathy to include an icon for "<3" (a heart). Guillaume, an Empathy developer, responded saying that they use the Icon Naming Specification and maybe I should propose to have "<3" added to that. Please take this as my proposal for that addition to the "Emotion" icons. The bug can be found here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=610899 I see that the only icons identified within the emotion section are faces; this would obviously be a change of course. But, I do believe/feel that it would be a welcomed deviation/addition. Why do I make this proposal? Honestly, because many popular IM clients (from gtalk's gmail interface to pidgin) support this emoticon and thus people use it with the belief that the receipient will see it rendered. Yes, I also think that all IM/Chat clients should support the same icon specification (and INS is a good candidate!), but this would be a useful addition to INS regardless. (\x2665) IS there any particularly good reason that we shouldn't be encouraging that behavior instead of using an icon? (FWIW, I believe FaceBook/etc... sites do this already as well.) My response would be "but that is not how any other IM clients do it" and by "any other" I mean gtalk, pidgin, and adium. And, wouldn't that also suggest that we should convert ":)" to ☺ (Unicode #263A) instead of an icon? I guess I'm saying: if we convert these things to icons normally, lets continue to do so. Thanks for your quick response, Greg ---- END EMAIL THREAD ---- I would also like to add another point now that I have re-read this: I would suggest against Unicode conversion because not all fonts support all Unicode elements and might not support ♥ or ☺, so making all emoticons actual images would be the safest way to implement this by the IM applications (Empathy in this case).
