You got it. Actually all tags are converted internally
from : to . form.

Can you imagine what amount of work would be to change
all templates? :) 
And BAS support may be buggy as well - it's surely not
so widely used as jboss / weblogic - so less feedback
from users.

If you believe that there is an error, 
raise issue in JIRA.
