This is in Hibernate module, right?
JBoss services have only a slightly defined DTD, since most elements are processed dinamically. Anyway... the merge points is there for the user add custom code/elements to the generated jboss-service.xml. Another question is: is it really useful? I think not. Hibernate jboss-service.xml is fairly simple and I can't see how the user would want to change it.

JBoss module generates JBoss descriptors for EJB's. The Hibernate jboss-service subtask generates a jboss service descriptos specific for the Hibernate JMX service.
