The precision="S" should be scale="S" as in the hibernate documentation for the column tag in hibernate reference manual section 5.1.20 (http://www.hibernate.org/hib_docs/v3/reference/en/html/mapping.html#mapping-column). Note that this section is labeled 6.1.20 in some Hibernate documentation which includes Quickstart with Tomcat as Chapter 1.
