Well, there is jmx plugin for xdoclet-2,
documentation about plugin itself and tags is
available on xdoclet.codehaus.org

I'm not sure that maven 2 plugin is fully optional,
but you may give it a try.  

And I do not use maven 2 myself [yet], so my knowlege 
is really limited.
