Netbeans/Forte/SunONE also has a single window (MDI) mode, and has done 
for a long time.  Select MDI rather than SDI in the configuration screen 
when you first run it, or change it later using Tools->Options (you'll 
find it under IDE Configuration->System->System Settings->User Interface, 
at least in version 3.4).
