I think it will be easier for you to use the packaged version of xcp/xenserver rather than the debian/ubuntu port of xapi. Once you get familiarized with xapi in a polished environement, then you can go back to your favorite operating system and you will be able to make a difference between a usage issue or a xapi issue.

Beware, it is a self contained operating system, and you have to install it on a dedicated machine.
