To run Solaris 10 on bare metal you would have South Bridge Intel ICH9R
in IDE emulation mode (ASUS  P5K Premium , P5E3 Deluxe)
OpenSuse 10.2 and higher support IDE Emulation for  sure.
I wonder maybe  CentOS 5.1 can handle that also ?
Just never tried anything different from AHCI or RAID on Linux Boxes :-)
  My intend is multibooting (with IDE emulation) vs Solaris 10 as VMware
Guest OS at CentOS 5.X on { Inlel P35 (Intel X38) + Intel ICH9R } boards.
