You do what you're doing - manually configure the interface. There's not an exact RFE for doing better that I could find, but there is: http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=4681 osol-0811-101a-rc1b : configuring static IP is very difficult. sys-unconfig requires hack.
