This is generally correct.

Unfortunately, the Solaris 10 PV drivers are not smart enough to
understand 'xvde' drives: they only deal with the standard IDE ones.
Thus, you have a maximum of four.

I just tried adding xvde at runtime, and the domU panicked. I'll be
filing a bug soon.
