Thanks for the response, but straight away I'm in over my head :-S What is 
"Viridian" and "IO enlightenment"? Also, is xVM gate 3.4 available as packaged 
install, or does it need to be built from source?

Hardware is consumer - Intel (branded) 965-based motherboard, extra Skymaster 
Sil3124-based SATA card, lots of 1TB WD disks.

Planned tasks are not strenuous either - this is a home server. Most of the 
work will be file serving, handled by OpenSolaris native / running as Dom0 
(depending on whether I use xVM or not).

Guests will be a couple of W2K8 x64 VMs, plus possibly one or two W2K3 / WXP 
x86 VMs.
