Thanks for your input.  I'll give it a try.  We are trying to get rid of some 
old hardware, but I still have to support an application on Solaris 8 x86, so I 
need a build environment.  It's really just going to be used for building this 
one application and maybe running tests on it.  Nothing performance sensitive.
