hello

at the moment i have several esxi virtual-server with a unsufficient and slow
storage-concept included (or i have to pay a lot of money). so i use separate
zfs server (free nexenta + my napp-it web gui) as a nas/san server to store
virtual machines on nfs shares.

this two server concept is fine for our primary server but not for cost
sensitive systems like test installations, home systems or small business.

my concept of a perfect tiny all in one server is:
-based on a minimal xen4 or vmware4 system with pci passthrough
-minimal zfs storage with latest features (i just say deduplication an
snapshots)
-other server (like windows or our vdr video server - pci passthrough to sat
card

my current config is:
-vti-d capable mainboard + 8gb+ ecc ram
-esx4i base system on a small raid-1 hardware raid
-minimal zfs storage (nexenta3 + napp-it webgui), lsi-sas controller and hds
(via vti-d)
-other systems with pci passthrough if needed

i hoped, opensolaris/ nexenta + xen on top will be the base, but i see no
stable or even running system in the near future, so i will go with esxi in the
moment.

it would be nice to hear your thoughts and concerns about this idea.
if you had a similar config or recommendations, please tell.
