Good suggestion. For the list archive, my gdb version string is:
"GDB 4.16 (sparc-sun-solaris2.5), Copyright 1996 Free Software Foundation, Inc."
I will want a shared lib in the future. I was just going to deal
with it later, or change to the shared lib in production versions
while still using the static lib to develop in.
