I was going to ask something similar. I submitted a patch for Xerces a while
ago that let one do just that. The reason was that I am packaging ICU for
Debian GNU/Linux (watch for the 1.8.1 packages soon, I submitted them a few
days ago), and Debian has a Xerces package, using iconv(3). I asked the
maintainer of this package to also provide an ICU-based version, and that's
when I made the patch.
Andy, is this part of Xerces now? Do you need another patch for something
newer than what I have (Xerces 1.3)?
