Can't build with gcc with a non-standard name

The patch I've just attached fixes this bug.

I've tested that it works on Solaris 8, building with 'g++-2.95.2', and on Red
Hat Linux 7.1, building with 'egcs++' (egcs 1.1.2). I've successfully run the
tests and the samples on both platforms.

The runConfigure script still complains that it doesn't know about the C++
compiler name, but while this is slightly ugly I don't think it's a particular
problem (and it's arguably correct).

The patch also includes a fix for bug 2680 ("-instances=static" is meaningless
to g++), since I had that fix in the same copy of the source tree.
