http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=7228 Source file names too long for Mac OS file system [EMAIL PROTECTED] changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |WONTFIX ------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2002-03-19 04:35 ------- Yes, it is true that many Xerces file names are too long for classic Mac OS. However, there are several reasons that we shouldn't accomodate this: (1) [Despite the fact that I am a long-time Mac user] If we cater to every OS that supported only shorter names (say VxWorks, or MS-DOS with 8.3 names) we'd be stuck with very poor file names. (2) There are a large number of such long file names in Xerces, which would cause disruption to a large number of users. I'll conceed that it was a poor decision initially to create files with such very long names, but...that's history, and reflective of Xerces' java heritage. (3) Apple has been shipping a mainstream OS (Mac OS X) for over a year that has support for long file names. Mac OS X is now Apple's primary OS. Where development for the Mac is occurring, it is presumably occuring on this system, and this is where we should concentrate our efforts. (4) Metrowerks, one of the primary suppliers of development tools for Mac OS, is "said to be" close to releasing an update that will support the use of files with long names on both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 systems. The other primary development environments on Mac OS X [unix command line and project builder] already support long file names. (5) Xerces has complete build instructions and tools for converting files with long file names to those needed under Mac OS 9 with current versions of CodeWarrior. See http://xml.apache.org/xerces-c/build-other.html#Mac. Please follow the instructions mentioned above. You should retrieve the Xerces archive using Mac OS X, untar it, and run the ShortenFiles.pl tool to shorten the file names. The Xerces directory can then be transferred to or used under a Mac OS 9 system. Hopefully these requirements will be loosened somewhat when the next version of CodeWarrior is released. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
