question about XMLTransService

can anybody tell me what the blockSize parameter
in the following method is ?

XMLTranscoder* XMLTransService::makeNewTranscoderFor(
                const char *const         encodingName,
                XMLTransService::Codes &  resValue,
                const unsigned int        blockSize,
                MemoryManager *const      manager
        )
