By now you've probably seen Neil's announcement re: the latest Xerces-2 beta which has alpha-level support for XML Schema.
We are hoping that by end of year, the XML Schema support in xerces-2 will be "beta" quality, and will have full constraint checking (including UPA, particle derivation checking, etc.) and will hopefully include some support for accessing the PSVI, support for grammar caching etc. I've checked a skeleton release plan into CVS for an end-of-year Schema beta, including some of the features listed above.
