Following the bug #1228 report [ http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1228 ], we want to introduce a feature that will allow users to control whether DOM/SAX APIs expose normalized or "initial" (specified in XML document instance) element values.
In previous Xerces1 versions by default we exposed element values that were normalized according to XML Schema REC. For Xerces 1.4.4 we plan to introduce a feature "../validation/normalize-element-contents" with the default value "false"[!] meaning that applications will no longer receive normalized element values. Question to users: given the fact that Xerces2 by default will NOT expose normalized values (we believe this is the correct behavior), do you mind us breaking compatibility for Xerces1 1.4.4 release? Do you prefer us introducing the "../validation/normalize-element-contents" feature with the default value set to true? We plan to release Xerces 1.4.4. as soon as possible, so please express your concerns if you have any.
