Actually in the *short* term, i merely wish to read them!

i would like to be able to use the element descriptions to populate a data
entry UI. The idea being that if the schema changes, then the data input
code would change automagically. this would dramatically lower maintenance
costs.

after the presentation portion of the UI works, then i want to be able to
validate the user input, so i'd then have to read the schema at an
increasingly sophisticated level.

XML Schemas. the project i am working on is concerned with MPEG7, which is
XMLSchema based.

wow, i hadnt thought of this. it would be possible to create a graphical
schema editor if one had this functionality. A platform independent
replacement for XMLSpy.

but, that's not an immediate concern for me.

well, now the difference in our assumptiosn become painfully apparent. :-)

i want to be able to parse a schema at 'startup' and then use it to
populate the ui.
