Regex engine fails to match substrings

Summary: Regex engine fails to match substrings
           Product: Xerces-J
           Version: 1.4.4
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: Other
         Component: Other
        AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The 1.4.4 regex package org.apache.xerces.utils.regex.* fails to match the
regex "\d+|\d*\.\d+" against the string "abc 42.7 xyz", see example code in
attachment. However, if there are no trailing characters after the matched text
in the target string, the regex will match.
