Oops, I guess I was not using Xerces 2.5.0. When I dropped xercesImpl.jar 
release 2.5.0 in "...\Tomcat 4.1\common\endorsed" my problem went away.
It's getting harder these days to figure out which Xerces version the class 
loader is picking up.
Sorry about that.
