Well, I've determined the problem of why Xerces was not finding some classes and I'm documenting it for others.
I had been using jdk3.1.1beta v something or the other (javac dated 1/31/2001). The problems disappeared when I started using the non beta release (javac dated 5/6/2001). Maybe other releases between those two would work just as well. Thank you to all who offered help.
