I’ve updated my TexLive distribution today, and started noticing
that, if you invoke the tipa package with xltxtra (and hence fontspec and xunicode) loaded, you get an extra trailing space just before the end of the
\textipa environment.

You're obvious using a TeX Live 2010 binary with the TeX Live 2009 distribution:

This is XeTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.2-0.9997.4 (Web2C 2010) (format=xelatex 2010.9.20) 20 SEP 2010 15:38

         restricted \write18 enabled.
         %&-line parsing enabled.
        **tipa_test.tex
        (./tipa_test.tex
        LaTeX2e <2009/09/24>
Babel <v3.8l> and hyphenation patterns for ... loaded.
        (z:/texlive/2009/texmf-dist/tex/latex/base/article.cls
Document Class: article 2007/10/19 v1.4h Standard LaTeX document class
        (z:/texlive/2009/texmf-dist/tex/latex/base/size10.clo
File: size10.clo 2007/10/19 v1.4h Standard LaTeX file (size option)

There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.
