I think TL 2010 is our best choice.

I would install TL 2010 directly (I have already installed it on my Mac; I 
haven't yet on Ubuntu, where I still use 2009).

To satisfy dependencies on Ubuntu (TL 2009), I followed section ``Vanilla TeX 
Live on Debian'' in

http://www.tug.org/texlive/debian.html

I guess we can adapt that to TL 2010 (that's what I'm planning to do).
