If the width of the single characters differ to the ligture,
then you can put both versions in boxes and compare the widths.
In case of a ligature this does not necessarily mean that
the output file contains a ligature glyph. It could be
a fake ligature at TeX level that get replaced by something
else, e.g. by using virtual fonts.
