I assume that you are using XMLmind XSL Utility. You need to configure XMLmind XSL Utility to use fonts other than the 14 standard PDF fonts. These 14 standard PDF fonts have very few glyphs. Instead please specify TTF fonts such as DejaVu, Arial, Times New Roman, etc.
This is done quite easily from within XMLmind XSL Utility by clicking the "Preferences" button and then selecting "Add-on|FOP".
