I am terribly sorry! I used the same GTK theme with and without mcs but forgot
to keep the icon theme consistant. The slowdown seems to occur when the Rodent
theme is used. Disabling xfce-mcs-manager changes the theme to Gnome and the
speed is much better. I didn't realise the icon theme could impact the speed ..
