Possibly it's this upstream bug: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5379 basically when you have several applications running that pop up "do you want to save what you are working on" dialogs, xfwm4 doesn't properly deal with them before quitting. So, it dies and doesn't have itself set to start in the next session. There was some work to fix this in 4.10, but not sure it's completely solved. ;( kevin
