Well, you shouldn't have to do anything. As long as xfce4-power-manager
is running the buttons normally work. :(

Thats a seperate command line utility. You run it from a shell... 

xbacklight -set 10

(sets the brightness to 10%)

If that doesn't work, it would seem to me to be a kernel issue, not
detecting the backlight at all.
