/usr/X11R6/bin is a directory -- that directory might well contain the
right file.  The name of that file could be X or it could be something
else if you have a weird setup (setup as in distrobution, unofficial
packages, that sort of thing).

I don't think you ever mentioned what kind of setup you are running and
whether you are building XFree86 from source?

One of the reasons why it should not just be a static text but some actual
code running in the server -- the X server knows the path to itself and
the user might not.

try the command which X or which Xserver and see if they find anything.
