I've been looking at this myself. `man Xcursor` will give you a bit more information, but if you edit the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme and remove the line Inherits=redglass or change it to Inherits= then startx again, it should revert to the solid cursor. I've just found a way to do this on a per-user basis, too. Create a ~/.icons/default/index.theme reading [Icon Theme] Inherits= Also, some window managers might be able to load their own cursors.
