I thought that monitor was 1600x1024.  At least older ones were.
I know of someone who got the 1600x1024 model working.  It used the
same modeline as the SGI flat panel.

   Does this monitor have the apple display connector?  You have an
adaptor of some sort, I presume.  I know the monitor has USB controls 
for brightness and such.  I don't know how one would set those under
Linux.  I assume by "tainted" you mean the mode timings aren't correct
rather than just color balance or brightness being out of whack
(which, I suppose, could be due to the lack of USB control).
