What I can say is this:
When I had RH7.1 and consequently updated XFree86 to version 3.3.6, I had the same
problem (checkered backgrounds for numerous windows and menus). This was fixed by
downloading and using XFree86-SVGA instead.
I've found that the only thing workable (with the driver currently in XFree86-4.2) is
to add the following option to the video card settings (in the Display Tool):
"noaccel" & I've also added for good measure - though I don't know if it's needed -
"no_bitblt".
Btw, a suggestion I have is that these options are intuitively included with future
releases. I only found out about them by chance doing a google search.
With these settings however, it is only really a usable setup by setting the colours
to 256 whereas with higher colour values the redrawing is painfully slow.
Without the option "noaccel" added in particular, any monitor setting produces the
same problem: checkered and unreadable backgrounds for many windowing areas. With
"noaccel" only 256 colours is viable for a responsive redrawing GUI.
So I guess I'm wondering what was removed from the codebase between XFree86-3.3.6 and
4.2? Also has this been addressed by a later version of XFree86, or will it?
