Do you already have an instance of the server running on the machine?

If you don't have another server running (or don't think you do) then remove
(the file located in) /tmp/(called or containing the phrase) ".X0-lock" and
start again.

If you do have another server running, close it and try again or launch the
second server with the appropriate options (one example: "startx -- :1")
