Yes, that's depth 8. You need a Subsection "Display" for Depth 8 in the Section "Screen" of the XF86Config file. And you use it by specifying the DefaultDepth 8 or from the command line (startx -- -depth 8).
Most people don't use that depth unless they have legacy apps which require PseudoColor visuals. Mark.
