When you startx, does the cursor move when you move the mouse?
Can you switch to another Virtual Terminal when X is running?  
And if so, can you send us the output of "ps aux" when run
while X is supposedly running?  I'd like to see if a window
manager is running or if the X-server is stuck in a loop.
