Hi Prasad !

To be able to use the font, follow this :

- launch xfontsel and look in the top right corner to see number of fonts avalaible.
- open a term
- switch as user root (su -)
- cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/
- copy here the font provided by the site (http://www.marathiworld.com/MARmith0.ttf)
- ttmkfdir > fonts.scale (don't pay attention to the warning message)
- ttmkfdir > fonts.dir (don't pay attention to the warning message)
- mkfontdir -e /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings
- fc-cache -f -v
- VERIFY you have -> FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/" in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file.
- open a term as normal user and type xset fp rehash
- launch netscape from same term and enjoy !!!

Hello

I am running slackware 9.0 distribution of linux with XFree86 4.3.0
on a PC with Cyrix M II processor.

Web sites with content in the language Marathi (an indic language)
do not display correctly using either Netscape of Konqueror. Even
when I install the fonts.

http://www.marathiworld.com [ uses MARmith0.ttf ]
http://www.esakal.com [ uses subak.ttf and subak1.ttf]
http://www.maharashtratimes.indiatimes.com [ uses sudipto.ttf ]

Content on these web-sites uses 8-bit fonts (which is true of most of Marathi
web-sites. They do not use Unicode fonts) But mkfontscale reports
some of these fonts as having iso10646 encoding which must be
an error.

For the first web-site only square blocks are displayed (maybe
the font matches, but X is not able to render them ?) For the other
two web-sites the font probably is not matched because it shows
a lot of little square blocks.

Any help would be immensely appreciated. I have been trying
various things for several days without success.

Thanks and regards
-Prasad
