Yes, this applies only to the ViRGE style chipsets. 4.3.0 ships different drivers for S3 ViRGE and S3 chipsets. There is a "s3" driver and an "s3virge" driver. To add to the confusion, S3 started shipping flavors of the Trio that have extensions like the ViRGE chips, ie, yours which is a Trio64V2/GX. If supported, it would be by the "s3" driver. I can only speak for s3virge, and it's not supported by that driver. > I am running Mandrake 9.1 on an old Compaq Deskpro with the S3 onboard. > I have tried XFdrake, testing at everywhere from 800x600x8bpp up to > 1024x768x24bpp (wishful thinking?), and I have tried the listed drivers > for: > > Trio64 (generic) > Trio64V2/GX (generic) > Virge/GX (generic) > > Now, sadly, I cannot seem to get it to test OK even when I choose XF > 3.3.6 :( The first two are your best bets. The s3 driver is one of the later ports to the 4.x architecture, and it appears not to have either of those yet. http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/RELNOTES3.html#10 > Thank you for a great piece of work, this is the first problem I have > ever had on any system with XFree, so I am more suspicious of Compaq and > S3 than XFree in this matter, that is fer sure. > > Cheers! > > p.s. maybe this is incentive to start learning to use Linux in text mode > only, huh? -- Kevin _______________________________________________ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
