Just a comment from someone who had to sweat a couple of weeks to get RH 9.0 to work 
with a flat
panel driven with DVI (digitally)...
I used the vesa driver in order to get some place and it worked (no accellerated 
obviously) but
this allowed me to check that gnome and kde (I have installed both) were working and 
to play
aroung with my configuration in a more pleasant environment than the console...
In my case (I have a Matrox G550) I had to download the newest version of the driver 
and install
it and everything was solved...
as with you the option FlatPanel was amiably ignored what sent me investigating right 
and left
until I realised I did not need it. For me that was the advantage of the vesa driver: 
showing what
was needed and what was not needed...
