I have been wrestling with this problem for the last week. I searched for answers in various databases and FAQs. I tried entering different values into the config tools and all I wound up doing was to break the Xfree server. So now maybe I can get some answers here?
The problem(s): I installed Mandrake 9.1. I was able to find my monitor and video card from the list. When the computer started up, though, The display was squished horizontally and stretched vertically. So much so that windows and menus extend off the edges of the screen sufficintly that I can not select buttons. So the question is what do I need to do to make this all workable? My monitor is an older IBM 8514 http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&context=HW300&q=8514&uid=psg1SBJR-3XPH3H&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&cc=us&lang=en MY video car is (once again older) Diamond Speedstar A50 (with 8mb) (sorry I can't find the manufacturers web site on this one) I have tried to enter in custom numbers for the monitor but everytime I do that all I do is break the server or wind up with something extremely out of whack (sound of monitor being smacked).
