[XFree86] alternative xfree86 and kernel source location

I was running out of room in my /usr/src and have therefore installed 
both the new kernel source and xfree86 cvs source on another volume, 
but do I need to set an environment varialble for xfree86's make file 
to find the correct kernel source and headers?

I've made a symbolic link from /usr/src/linux to the new location and 
have made one from /usr/include/linux to the kernel include directory. 
Is there anything else I need to do to make it possible to successfully 
compile the xfree86 source?
