X is started with xdm. My /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers has:
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt07

This is XFree86 4.3.0 under Linux 2.4.22.

When switching from the X to another console, such as with Ctrl-Alt-F4,
characters are missing from the display. Sometimes a whole column is
missing and sometimes what I type is missing every other character (but it
still works).

xdm was started from the first virtual console.

My virtual consoles are managed with init from sysvinit-2.84 and agetty
from util-linux-2.11z.

When I start X using startx and switch consoles, it seems to work fine (no
missing characters). So the problem seems to appear to be related to xdm.

I tried "reset" and it cleared the screen, but the missing characters
problem continued.

Does anyone know a solution for this?

If this is documented somewhere, please let me know.

Thank you,
