This was bandied about a month or so ago; I believe the best answer was "create a cursor that has no bits on at all, and switch to it." If you're wanting to do this in non-custom code, it might be a bit more difficult. I'd check the archives of this mailing list (which you might not have actually realized *was* a mailing list) and see if you can find that thread. They should be at the website.
