You should give some info on your monitor which distribution you have and possibly post your XF86config... I myself have a G550 with a Samsung SyncMaster 181T which I drive with DVI and have few problems. I have a console login (just in case problems occur) and use startx, sometimes it takes a bit of time for X to come up and it has happened that I just canceled it and typed startx again it then started much faster...
