Being a newbie, I suspect that when you installed Mandrake you overlooked the box that should be checked if you want a graphical login. If you did, you have to type "startx" at the final prompt, and maybe some other info. Since I have always checked the graphical login, I have never had this problem. Also, you could have accidently misconfigured your graphics card. Since you have an intel i810 I would assume that Mandrake would correctly identify and configure X since this chip is so widely used.
