Here are the lines I found to be most interesting: (--) PCI:*(1:0:0) S3 unknown chipset (0x8d04) rev 0, Mem @ 0xec000000/19, 0xe0000000/27 (II) VGA: Generic VGA driver (version 4.0) for chipsets: generic (EE) VGA(0): Driver can't support depth 24 What I read from this is: It doesn't recognise your S3 chipset, so it uses a generic VGA driver. It then concludes that the default depth of 24 bits colours cannot be supported, and it shuts down. I noticed you use a reasonably old version of XFree86. Would it be wise to upgrade to 4.3.x or 4.4.x?
